It might sound funny to say sports isn’t my thing, since I started fighting in boxing/kickboxing in 1996.
But it’s really not. It was more of a life-saving thing for me than a sport thing.
I’ve had a lot of people ask me about my thoughts/predictions on the Khabib vs. McGregor fight happening tomorrow. I don’t care so much about this fight or even sports. Just my truth.
I do care about this though.
THROW YOUR PUNCH!
This goes for anyone and everyone in their lives.
Don’t stand by and watch athletes do things you wish you could do. Famously known as ‘shoot your shot’ or ‘run your play’, these are metaphors for Nike’s famous tag line. “Just do it”.
Do the things you want to do.
THROW YOUR PUNCH!
Apply for the job. It’s a long shot? Who cares.
You threw your punch.
Ask the person out for a drink. They’re already taken? Who cares. They’ll turn you down.
Maybe they’re single and not interested in you. Who cares. They’ll turn you down.
You threw your punch.
Create a LIVE FB video. No one watches it? Great. You can’t be embarrassed then.
Everyone watches it and you’ve got a booger hanging out of your nose? Well then you are embarrassed. And you’ll get over it.
You threw your punch.
It’s all I’ve ever done since the day I sat on a curb crying after getting pushed out of a Bronco and decided to step into my fear and turn things around. I now realize why I’m so capable of teaching self-confidence to girls and how to step forward boldly.
I decided to throw my punch. And I’ve been doing it ever since that day.
More than peeps asking me about my predictions about tomorrow’s fight (which I’m not even gonna watch cuz I’m seeing Dessa at Orchestra hall) I get a lot of questions about how I got on American Ninja Warrior two times.
Know my answer?
Yup. I THREW MY PUNCH!
60,000-80,000 people apply to get on the show. I had a couple beers with my sister and decided to actually make an audition video and submit it. Even though I’m terribly under-qualified compared to some of my brilliant, obstacle crushing friends, I thought, “Why not”?
You won’t know if you don’t try. And if you’re afraid of failing...read this article. It’s incredible and all about people shooting their shots (aka: throwing their punch) and mostly failing miserably.
AMAZING ENOUGH, They are all still alive. Most of the time when you throw your punch, you’re not gonna die. So why not just try and see what happens?
And HUGE gratitude goes out to one of my favorite writing inspirations. Alex. She wrote this article which reminded me I’m doing this thing I really want to do in life.
THROWING MY PUNCHES. OVER. AND. OVER. AND. OVER.
The odds are good that if I keep it up I’ll land a KO at life someday. Or maybe not. I’m willing to punch anyway.
