One of my fav activities is hanging with the nephew and nieces I have here in Mn. I’ve got 3 nieces that I don’t get to see as often as I like, and a nephew just two weeks out of the womb, but the lively ones I’m speaking of belong to my awesome sis Said Kelley (you know her from my really sweet vids she edits, and my beautiful-to-look-at website she helped me build).
These little kiddos are fraught with possibility.
For example, in my most recent hang with them, the littlest one, Lenny, went from “I’m hot”-to-“I’m cold”-to-“I’m hungry” in a matter of minutes. Possibility for this small imp changes moment to moment depending on her immediate responses to environment.
It got me thinking…how often, as adults, we’ll take a particular experience in a particular type of enviroment and make it a certainity. Like, when this happens then I’m always going to experience that.
We typically won’t allow for the possibility that a circumstance can change after we’ve experienced something similar to it before. We set these things in stone.
I find it so curious that my adorable, and slightly incorrigible niece can be hot in one moment and then cold the next…but that is the possibility of living moment to moment.
Because after that she’s hungry, and then only moments later she was happy (without eating a morsel of food).
I realized during all of this, that she FELT THE WAY SHE WANTED TO FEEL IN THE MOMENT.
I know all caps can be annoying, but I really want to get across that when a toddler feels what she wants to feel and may shout it out to the world is also how we operate as adults. We feel what we want to feel.
Sometimes we try to bury it, or disguise it, or fake it. But ultimately we get to decide….if we’re hot or cold. Hungry or happy.
It is what we place our attention on in the moment that brings our feelings to the surface. The beauty of this is we have the power to choose what we are attentive to.
So in your life, what are you attentive to…the successes in each day or the failures in each day?
Are you hot on possibility or feeling cold with your potential?
Are you hungry for more or happy with what you have right now?
You get to feel the way you want to feel. Here’s the truth bomb:
What you feel is sourced from what you choose to focus on.
