Social media is kind of kicking my butt. For all the punches and kicks I have thrown in my lifetime I never thought my biggest beatdown would come in the form of technology.
I am doing my best to stay with the times in order to grow my business. However, I find it all incredibly overwhelming, what with Facebook, The Twitters (as a friend of mine calls it), blogging, updating my website, and consolidating my presence on the web. I feel like I have been seriously blitzed by a crazy punching person that never gets tired and never backs down.
How do you assuage the overwhelm of web information that is available, and manage your life on the computer?
Here’s a few things I have designed that have helped me:
1. I created folders in my e-mail so that when I get new stuff coming in I can assign it a place so I am not met with a FULL inbox every time I log in.
2. I began using twitter which allows me to post and automatically go to my Facebook page so that I can share to more outlets with less time requirement.
3. I create a To-DO research list and assign a time limit to it. This allows me to look up the things I am interested in and get information that I need, but because I am “on the clock” I don’t get sucked into detailed reading of websites or distracted by new, and tempting links that might take me down the rabbit hole.
4. I enlist the “doesn’t have to be perfect” rule. And by the way… I am actually enlisting this one on the post you are reading now. Often with e-mails, commenting on posts, or updating to Twitter and Facbook I will read, then re-read, edit, read again, edit again, check my spelling, do another edit…I think you get the point. After 30 minutes I am still working on the same e-mail that was meant to be a “quick reply”. Well, in this day and age of technology with things coming and going so quickly, guess what? It doesn’t have to be perfect. This is not a million dollar job proposal. It is a quick update on what is happening in my life, and I’m not perfect.
So…no surprise if this post isn’t perfect either.
I am happy you are here and would love to hear the ways that you manage your web presence. Are you rocking it? I could use a little advice, so leave a comment, let me know how you handle it all, and look so gorgeous doing it, by the way (yes that is a ‘leave a comment bribe’). If you are on the same side as I am and struggling, let me know I am not alone (and by the way you ALSO look gorgeous even in your struggle)!
Ps. I only edited this one time, couldn’t help it. I am a perfectionist at heart.
