Are you gearing up for back to school? It doesn’t matter whether you are a parent and your kids are heading back, a student yourself, or you aren’t signed up for any courses at all. You will feel an energy shift to get back into routine, schedule, and learning when it gets close to September.
The truth is that you are always a student. No matter where you are in life you have an opportunity to use your circumstances and daily interactions as learnings. Expansion and growth sound great but what of the stretching that is required to get there?
Ahhh, yes the discomfort of growing pains.
The perspective on growing pains is often dread, trepidation, negativity, and overall gloom and doom. Let’s change this. When you were two years old you didn’t rip your diaper off one day and say, “starting today I will pee/poo in the toilet”. You didn’t go through algebra before you learned addition and multiplication. You didn’t get behind the wheel without learning the rules of the road and getting trained first. Life makes it very clear, there is an order to learning.
Sometimes the order is easy and you “get it” right away, other times it takes a bit longer. When you are on the verge of a big learning, life makes it clear, there is an order to learning and in it you will experience growing pains. I’ve got good news, bad news, and best news.
First the bad news.
You will experience growing pains. They will be at times uncomfortable, painful, and way more often than you want, they will be downright excruciating.
Like, teeth cutting-growing inches in weeks-bending your thumb nail backwards-stubbing your toe-slamming your elbow-losing a friend-getting rejected-failing at something you cared about-finding out the truth-being betrayed, excruciating.
Then the good news.
This doesn’t last. And the worse it feels, the more awesome goodness that is waiting for you on the other side. This is proven.
Okay well maybe not proven, but if your perspective of the pain is intense, as bad as it feels means when the pain passes you will feel that much more relief.
NOW, best news.
Here is a 3 step method to get yourself through growing pains
- Remind yourself, “I am growing right now. I won’t always be here”.
- Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this growing experience. What is here for me to learn”?
- Tell yourself, “Life offers me the opportunity to experience contrast and grow. I am so grateful for this time in my life. Thank you”.
